Perhaps from a moral perspective an argument could be had whether there is a moral justification for "killing" non humans for consumption sake when there is abundance else available for human survival given non humans have neurological substrates to trigger conscious states that supports consciousness ?

If this is the correct forum (it seems it should be placed in some general forum as the subject is very relavant to Sikhi and Nature and Health) then I believe the circumstances guide one to take the most suitable course and benefit or suffer the consequences.

Personally I feel that religions guide us, in case of Sikhi, information available can allow us to use the least 'offensive' food to keep on the right side of nature.

I am interested in the guidance from SGGS and from Gurus to see how they lived their lives and what they ate and the resultant fate.

It seems that the Gurus tended to veer towards seeds like rice, pulsars, beans etc. probably because the plant by the time it has produced the seed also comes to the end of its life. So the guilt related to eating seeds, with my limited knowledge of biology, should be the least compared to eating say green 'food', vegetables then progressing to animals.

If one looks from the people who live in enviornment where seeds can not be harvested, like eskimos, space etc. more suitable alternative will be found possibly fish or meat or 'processed' food - however that is a subject in its own right.

The kiddo - how can people cut a chicken and eat it, yucky.. she made a scornful face... She has little children, they will cry and miss their mommy. (She is not aware yet of the other meats being consumed).
The surprised daddy - it's..You know like... Wrong you feel?.
Kiddo - yes, remember how happy the chicks were playing hide and seek, catchy-cathy with their mommy. She smiled at the reminiscence of our farm visit. How can bad people be so bad. If they want - they can ask the hen and eat some food from their plates. Can they not - hens are good, mommy hen will share her food.
Daddy - I, er... It's err.. you know kiddo, some minerals are found in the meat so to be strong people eat them, also some like the taste.. a lot of good people too eat meat
Kiddo - confused. Rolls her eyes - don't lie - she yells.. God put minerals in the earth. We have a lesson in our book. You don't eat chicken - yet you are strong. Ice cream is yummy, they can eat that. When mommy cut her finger you said the knife is bad. How can people who cut mommy hens be good?
Dad - (staring at her smiling mom) - you see, plants have life too but we eat them. You eat them too.
Kiddo - (jumps off the sofa with a ruler in her hand, imitates her teacher) plants give us gifts, mommy told me they are like Gurudwara sevadars who serve langar. The mango tree gives us mangoes (at the Gurudwara) but still is so happy, always smiling.
Dad - so eating plants is ok then ( a cute role reversal - the hunter becomes the prey now)
Kiddo - not all
Dad - really, tell me
Kiddo - you cannot eat rose plants , I like them. You can eat fruits, roti, dal..(she smiles so innocently, a shyful blush) God knows you cannot eat air so he gave us a hundred, hundred plants.
(Mom folds her Guthka and postpones the Sukhmani sahib - this exchange is mesmerising)
Dad - so, if you eat plants you are good?
Kiddo - oh ho, mommy - she pleads. Daddy does not even know this. God makes the langar, but the plants are sevadars - they serve us.
Dad (amused now) but there is only one tree in the Gurudwara ?
Kiddo (annoyed now - spreads out her arms wide) mommy told me our house is a Gurudwara, my school too is a gurdwara, even mars, is a gurudwara (her latest science topic in class) she did not tell you? (She looks at her mom)
Dad - but your cat eats fish?
Kiddo - did it ask you to give it fish, it just said 'meow' I am hungry. I give them cookies and they eat happily.
Mom - kiddo, dad has to meet a friend, so go out and play.

Be careful around her - mom warns me - you confused man - and smiles. She knows just a little but she is a Sikhni - she will tear you to shreds.
And I hear the sweet voice of the kiddo calling out to the crows, her wild, free pets. How they answer her call I shall never know, wish I never know. Some mysteries are better left unresolved. The enigma is stupefying. Her sweet voice is a whisper soon and I know the two black Ravens are with her. The mystic sound of the Sukhmani sahib resonates in the room as I grab the towel and head for the shower.
