Now, Manpreet Badal expelled from Akali Dal


Chandigarh: Punjab's ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has expelled a defiant Manpreet Singh Badal from the party, a week after he was sacked as the state's Finance Minister for going against the party line on subsidies and the Centre's reported debt waiver offer.

Manpreet, nephew of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, was expelled on the charge of anti-party activities following the recommendation of the party's Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC), SAD Secretary Daljit Cheema said.

The action against the 48-year-old four times MLA from Gidderabaha was taken by SAD after he failed to appear before DAC here today following a show cause notice issued to him last week in the wake of his differences with the party over the reported conditional debt waiver offer from the Centre.

Earlier in the day, the DAC, facing defiance from Manpreet, had recommended his expulsion from the party.

Manpreet was suspended from the party and sacked as minister on October 13 after he had locked horns with the party top brass on the issue of subsidies and the Centre's reported offer of conditional waiver of loans taken by the state during militancy years in Punjab.

The senior legislator was asked by the DAC on October 11 to appear before it today and not to go public on any issue during the interim period.

However, Manpreet stuck to his views on phasing out the subsidies in return for debt waiver and had announced earlier itself that he would not appear before the DAC.

"We had asked Manpreet to appear before us by 11 am, but we waited till 1.30 pm. He did not bother to make his presence before us... besides he also made statements against (his cousin) Sukhbir Singh Badal, the core committee of the SAD... he has indulged in anti-party activities," DAC chairman Ranjit Singh Brahmpura said.

He said the decision to recommend Manpreet's expulsion from the party was "unanimous."

"Manpreet had made condemnable statements against Sukhbir and core committee members of the SAD," he said.

The sacked minister had maintained that he would continue his fight by remaining within the SAD.

Cheema said the party also issued show-cause notices to two MLAs Jagbir Singh Brar, and Manpreet's relative and Manjinder Singh Kang who had rallied behind the former Finance Minister.

Another MLA Sant Ajit Singh from Chamkaur Sahab, who had also sided with Manpreet, took a U-turn on Tuesday after Sukhbir met him in Ropar district.

To put it mildly, it is nothing but a pimp and a hoe show.

Now both Badal have tough road to hoe because people have formed opinions of both of them. This will not be a game of dolls for Badals to tie knots and untie whenever they like. I am confident that in the days of elections both of the parties when reach to the public to get their favour--- both will get reward to their deeds/ misdeeds --- the public will not forget the episode so easily.
If anybody feel bad. The media and the public used to play the wrong song. But as the Government in power has having control over Government machinery, Police and administration the matter can be nipped and the ruling party used to dictate media according to their beneficial ends, the media that used to get advertisements from the Govt in crores of rupees have to bow to the pressure of the Govt.
One can dig with a hoe and extract the roots of the flower beds but sometime due to non operation of right angle of the flat blade the roots remains in the earth and with the gap of time the flowers again comes out.
So at this moment the actions are fruitful or not ---- can not be predicted.
Sometimes deep roots are not so easy to supplant

The thing that amazes me is the total disregard for Sikhi tenets and values by these Sikh leaders. They should be the Nishaan Sahib bearers but they are nothing but pimps. They will sell anyone, go to any derawalas and touch their feet to get a few votes.

If Guru Nanak could see them today, then the thrashing would be much worse than it is in Asa ki Vaar.

Battle of Badals is not over yet
The battle for succession within the Shiromani Akali Dal has just begun even though deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal may have won the first round by getting his cousin, Manpreet Badal out of his way for the moment. Manpreet, once the favourite of his uncle and chief minister Parkash Singh Badal is unlikely to give up the fight easily and his unceremonious exit could spell trouble for the ruling coalition of the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Akali Dal came to power in 2007 after failing to cross the half way mark in the 117-member Punjab assembly on its own for the first time. Had it not been for the 19 seats won by the BJP, the coalition partners would have been sitting on the opposition benches. The BJP, despite its pivotal role in the formation of the government, did not insist on getting the deputy CM’s position but allowed Sukhbir to become his father’s number two largely because of the Badals’ excellent relations with L.K. Advani.

It is obvious that Sukhbir wanted to settle the succession issue during the lifetime of his ageing father who has been the unquestioned leader of the Akali Dal for several decades. However, many within the Akali Dal rated Manpreet Badal and even Adesh Pratap Kairon who is also related to the family as better bets. But leaving nothing to chance, Sukhbir has managed to get Manpreet out of the way.
But the ramifications of the decision to get Manpreet out of the Cabinet and the party will be felt when the next round of elections take place in 2012. A divided Akali Dal may not be able to pose a stiff challenge to the Congress which is hoping to make a comeback largely because of a strong anti-incumbency factor working against the ruling coalition. But the key factor in the Congress comeback mission would be who leads their 2012 campaign in the state. Even staunch Akali supporters admit that if the Congress uses Captain Amarinder Singh, former CM, as its spearhead, its chances will certainly brighten. Amarinder Singh, who belongs to the Patiala royal family, has the requisite charisma and guts to take on the Akalis.
It is in this context, that many in Punjab are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the new Punjab Congress chief. A section within the Congress, with the blessings of some central leaders, is also toying with the idea of toppling the present Punjab government if circumstances work towards a split within the Akali Dal in view of the latest developments. If that happens, it will be major folly and the Congress may end up with egg on its face.

Sukhbir Badal is also not going to sit idle and could probably get himself elevated as the CM with his father’s blessings. His elevation is merely a matter of time as the Akalis know that they too will have to project someone younger as their supreme leader during the next round of polls. The Akalis are also conscious that without the support of the BJP, it may not be possible to get the crucial Hindu support in the state. Therefore, if Sukhbir is made the CM some time in the future, the BJP may be accommodated in the number two slot.
Manpreet will be a major hurdle when the battle is fought in the Badal’s home constituency since the succession will not be complete for Sukhbir till he puts his stamp of authority in their traditional stronghold. Politics in Punjab is likely to see many more developments in the months ahead and if there is a challenge within the Akali Dal, it will show up nearer to the polls. For the Congress, it will be very crucial to project a mass leader like Amarinder Singh for the final battle. It would be folly to depend on the power politics within the Akali Dal to come back to power. But a Sukhbir vs Amarinder fight would certainly be highly billed and decide which way the state will ultimately go. Between us.
