Amrita Pritam is credited to be the first prominent woman Punjabi Poet , Novelist and essayist . Her career spanned over six decades during which she wrote over a 100 books of poetry , fiction , biographies , a collection of punjabi folk songs and an autobiography that were translated into many other languages . Amrita Pritam was a winner of some very prestigious Literary awards . She not only excelled in the field of poetry but her essays and novels too took the literary world by storm .

In 1956, she became the first woman to win the Sahitya Akademi Award for her magnum opus, a long poem, Sunehray (Messages), later she received the Bhartiya Jnanpith, one of India's highest literary awards, in 1982 for Kagaz Te Canvas (The Paper and the Canvas). The Padma Shri came her way in 1969 and finally, Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award, in 2004, and in the same year she was honoured with India's highest literary award, given by the Sahitya Akademi (India's Academy of Letters), the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship given to the "immortals of literature" for lifetime achievement.

Yes, Amrita Pritam is a great writer, in fact one of the best in Punjabi and one of the most prominent women writers because during her time, Punjabi literature was dominated by men like Sohan Singh Seetal, Nanak Singh etc. etc. She broke the golden dome.

One of her famous and in my view the best Punjabi novel "Aalnah"- The Nest, is missing from the list. I hope it is available online and is a must read.

I have been fortunate enough to read all her books as she was Papa ji's one of many sisters who was not related to him in any biological sense as all others.
