PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Sikh Union will be visiting National Service (NS) camps that have Sikh trainees, to get feedback from them about any problems they may be facing in the programme.
NS Training Department director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil said he has also asked Sikh groups to choose representatives to be roped in as NS trainers.
Abdul Hadi said other races were also welcome to visit the NS camps and enlist as trainers to foster more understanding under the 1Malaysia spirit.
He was speaking at a press conference on a recent incident, when the hair of a 17-year-old Sikh trainee, Basant Singh, was cut off while he was asleep in the Sungai Bakap camp.
Abdul Hadi said the camp commander has been told to meet the boy's parents to discuss if he wanted to switch camps or defer the training. The boy, however, cannot be exempted from NS.
