APAH, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- The National Service (NS) Training Department is leaving it to the police to get to the bottom of a case where a Sikh NS trainee's hair was cut while he was sleeping.

The incident happened at his dormitory at the Sungai Bakap NS training camp in Penang on Sunday.

NS Training Department director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechik said though their own internal probe did not turn up any evidence, they were referring the matter to the police as per the standard operating procedures of the department.

"Our internal investigations were done at two levels, one by the camp commandant and trainers while the other by a special team from the NS headquarters," he told reporters after making a visit to the Sentosa NS camp in Chenderiang near here Friday.

He said the trainee involved, Basant Singh, 18, who was on leave had been allowed to extend his leave.

"I am also giving him the option of transferring to another NS camp or defer his NS training programme...but it would be best if decides to continue the programme at his original camp," he said.

Basant, who lodged a police report on the incident the same day, is reported to be reluctant to continue with the programme as the incident had traumatised him.

In Sikhism, males and females are not allowed to cut their hair from the time of their birth.

On another matter, Abdul Hadi said all 83 trainees at the Sentosa camp who were detected to have Influenza Like Illness (ILI) last week, had fully recovered.

He said quick action by Health Ministry officials helped prevent the disease from spreading to other trainees and that the camp had been allowed to reopen.

He added that the Health Ministry had given the green light to NS camps to continue operating as normal if there was a recurrence of an ILI outbreak so long as the affected persons were isolated.
