MELBOURNE: A student from Andhra Pradesh who was among four students from
India, assaulted by a group of teenagers this week, is battling for
life in a hospital
here.
Shravan Kumar, the 25-year old student is in a critical condition, said one of his close friends who also had a narrow escape during that attack.
"Doctors are still unsure if Kumar will survive and if he does, he will lose his vision or memory", Kumar's friend, Sinivas Gandhi, said.
A group of teenagers attacked four Indian students while they were partying here over the weekend, leaving Kumar in a serious condition. Sinivas said the attackers abused them and said they should go back to India.
They were hit with a screwdriver by the attackers who apparently were in drunken state.
While three were discharged after medical treatment, Kumar is still fighting for his life.
Kumar, hailing from Andhra Pradesh, came to Australia two years ago and was a student of automotive engineering at Cambridge International College here. Sinivas said, the police had asked them to take care of their own security and even said that they "can't go on protecting each and everyone".
He said they were also asked to change their residence in a bid to protect themselves.
Violent attacks on Indians have been growing over the last few years and has raised serious concern for aspiring students who wish to study in Australia.

drop plan sending their children to Australia. Also it will create more hatred for whites in India. |

I am not saying all Sikh's stand up for themselves, but the old timers I know there (my wife relatives live in Woolgoogala ....or something like that), and they would immediately seek reprisals for an attack like this. Sikh Community in Woolgoolga |

In a fresh attack targetting Indians in Australia [Images], a student suffered up to 30 per cent burns after a suspected petrol bomb was hurled at him in his home in Sydney [Images].
According to local newspaper for Indian community, South Asia Times, 25-year-old Rajesh Kumar was quickly covered by a blanket by his flatmate after the attack on Thursday, an act which saved him from further injuries.
Kumar was sitting on his bed in the front room of his rented house when an unknown person threw what neighbours say was a small petrol bomb through his window. The explosion and subsequent fire left Kumar with burns to a third of his body.
The latest attack came as Shravan Kumar, a 25-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh, is fighting for life in a Melbourne [Images] hospital after being stabbed by a screwdriver by a group of teens in a weekend attack that also left three of his friends injured. Doctors have said they were not very optimistic about Kumar's recovery.
Another student Baljinder Singh, stabbed by two attackers with a screwdriver early this week, has been released from hospital on Friday
A New South Wales Fire Brigades spokesman said Rajesh Kumar's flatmate Arminder Singh did the right thing when he grabbed a blanket and threw it over his friend, extinguishing the flames.
"He was crying, on fire. He lay down on the ground and I put the blanket on him," Singh said, adding, "I told him everything was going to be OK. He was asking: 'Is my face OK?" Singh, 33, said he was halfway between the laundry and kitchen when he heard the sound of smashing glass and his friend screaming. He and another flatmate, Chander Mohan, said they saw Kumar run out of his bedroom and out the front door with his back and arms on fire.
Singh and Mohan said the attack was terrifying.
"We could not sleep, we could not eat all night," Singh said.
They had moved into the house with Kumar and two other flatmates in February but were moving out again as soon as possible, Mohan said.
He said Kumar had no enemies and had not been in any trouble. "We don't know why," Mohan said.
Singh said he had been robbed on the street three times in the past two months. |

Adding to the growing list of violent attacks on Indians in Australia [Images], a taxi driver from Hyderabad was reportedly bashed up by a drunken man in Melbourne [Images]. Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=25173
The 35-year old victim picked up the passenger, who was in an inebriated state, from Chapel street for the suburb of Blackburn in his taxi, when he was attacked by him on Sunday morning.
"After we reached Blackburn the passenger asked me to take him to Ringwood when my taxi tyre went flat. I tried to tell him I won't be able to take him any further and he started abusing me," the victim said on condition of anonymity.
The victim, hailing from Hyderabad, was then beaten and punched by the attacker.
"I have injuries on face, leg and hand. I have two broken teeth as well," the victim, who went unconscious after the attack, claimed.
The man was then taken to Alfred Hospital by the police, who informed his family. The man was discharged on Monday, a family member told PTI. Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=25173
The police, according to the victim's family member, also got hold of the attacker.
The victim said he did not think it was a racially motivated attack but an "opportunistic crime".
When contacted, hospital authorities did not provide details of the victim. There was also no official confirmation of the incident so far. |
