Govt gets cold feet on honour killings Bill - India News - IBNLive
New Delhi: With the Union Cabinet divided over stricter punishment to honour killers, the decision to introduce a bill in the Parliament in the monsoon session for amending the IPC was deferred on Thursday.

The Cabinet discussed an amendment to a bill, making punishment for honour killing more stringent.

Honour killing was to be brought within the ambit of murder, so those party to the decisions will be charged accordingly. The government may introduce a bill in the Parliament in the monsoon session to bring amendments to the Indian Penal code.

The Cabinet discussed the amendments on Thursday. If honour killing is brought within the ambit of murder, it may introduce a clause to include honour killing within the ambit of murder. That means those who are party to the decision of killing, including Khap panchayats and families who enforce the decisions, will be liable for punishment.

Presently the only charge on honour killing is "conspiracy to kill" which leads to a punishment ranging from five years to a life term. But there is reportedly opposition from within the Congress party, especially from MPs of Haryana.

Law Minister Verappa Moily and Home Minister P Chidambaram are involved in framing the bill.

Pardon me! Is India trying to show the world that it is still a Third World country - and a backward one at that? So much for modern India as a world power in the 21st century.

India is indeed a third word country.Much of its population live in rural India or small town untouched by Globalisation

But India is trying to convince the world otherwise, that good ol' Bharata Mata is an advanced leader of the world. This certainly shows the truth behind the glitter and gloss.
