Your mom is right. Turh- thaar is called Mexican cucumber. Turh is much lighter in colour and has no skin that needs peeling unlike kheera. One can buy Turhs at Mexican grocery stores. And Kheera is the cucumber that we all know about.

Those who love -choliyah- can also get it in the Mexican food markets. Choliyah is green garbanzo bean in a pod. And they are sold just in pods without the leaves and the soft twigs like in Punjab. I love them.

Charan ji,

Guru Fateh.

The smoothness of a language depends on the enunciation and the kind of words to express the same meaning. It is my personal opinion that the Rawalpindi dialect of Punjabi is lyrically poetic as compared to Punjabi spoken in Punjab, India.

When I used to live in Ferozepore,my hometown, we used to get Pakistani TV Channels and I am talking about the late 60's. The Punjabi in their soap operas sounded much sweeter to the ears than on this side of the border somehow.

Ok ... firstly, we say 'Kheera' - mmmm yummy

Also ... I actually say some words from 'standard punjabi' and some from 'doaba' dialect (which is apparantly what we speak) .. and yes charan ji, i also say 'aa' and 'sigey'

I don't know what Rawalpindi dialect sounds like, but if it is as you describe it, it's probably very nice. Maybe you can share a video where someone speaks Rawalpindi dialect?

But I still don't think it's fair to say that Indian Punjabi is rough and crude... Hmm..Let's agree to disagree 8-)

Re: Sat sri akal

SSA,
Charan Ji its a Regional thing and you are right its the people speaking it that can make it what it is. I just find some Regions sound very Articulate than others but yes they are all nice. I like the Punjabi "Gurdass Mann" speaks & sings that i can call Beautiful. Thankyou for letting me know about the THAAR. The more i think of the word Thaar the more it sounds like a "Wire" now....

Please no writing in Punjabi. The official language of the forum is English. If you want it is fine to write in Punjabi with an English translation. Please forgive me.
