DURING A 30-MINUTE DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT, Karen Thomas went from coping with illness to facing death. The cancer in her breast, which had been treated, had spread to her pelvic bone and lungs, catapulting her from stage II to stage IV cancer, the worst kind.
