Moderation question.

This thread is currently in the "Controversies" sub forum. Was that your intention? So far it appears to have a comparative religion focus. In other words, it seems to be headed in the direction of how "amrit" is understood by different cultures, religions, and in different centuries.

Should the thread be moved to Interfaith Dialogues?

Nanak is saying that this world is like a giant ocean. We can cross this ocean with the help of the truth offered to us by the Guru-by following the Guru's path. Many people are stuck in the throes of egotism and stubbornness. They get stuck. But those who become Gurmukhs, are given His support to cross the ocean. Without Akal Purakh's support, you cannot cross the ocean and therefore gain peace for your soul. That is why we need to do ardaas that we may always remain with His support as no other support suits me. Ahead of me I see burning jungles (life being destroyed) and behind me I see new plant life growing (life rejuvenating). This all happens under His hukam. He also is within all life. Akal Purakh himself brings people close to Him and himself keeps people close to Him in their temple like bodies He has created. Hey Waheguru, bless me so I always remember you with each breath and never forget you. When I am blessed by Him, the more He stays in my mind, the more I drink the nectar (amrit) of his name. You have given me this mind and this body, you are my master. Please bless me that I may remove my ego and remain absorbed/dedicated to you. The one who created this universe also created all shapes and forms including the trilogy. The Gurmukh enters the light but the manmukh remains in darkness. Waheguru resides in everyone, but only one can follow the Guru's teachings wil understand this. Those who become Gurmukh and recognise the Guru's jyot, are congratulated. They become one with Akal Purakh for always and inherit his Goodness. Nanak tells us that the person who connects with his word and follows his path, develops peace. That person surrendours their soul and body to Waheguru.

From this shabad it can be seen that Guru Ji changes the concept of amrit round completely from the Hindu or any other notion of amrit. To gain peace and support we are told to do ardaas in the rahao line, NOT DRINK AMRIT.

The amrit of naam comes to us if we follow the Guru's path, therefore it is a result, not a cause. If it is a result it cannot be the physical water. If it is amrit of naam then clearly it is the peace obtained from becoming a Gurmukh and following the Guru's path as described in the rest of the shabad.

Guru Ji frequently took a term that was in common use, as demonstrated in previous posts relating to Hindu mythology. But the meaning of that term is turned around completely to mean something different. This occurs frequently in Gurbani and is beautifully demonstrated here. This allowed him to speak to the common man in language that they inderstood.
Jasleen Kaur.

Re: What is the origin of Amrit ?

We should not get confused with Amrit and Khande Ki Pohul. For the concept of Amrit we shoild adhehe to the references frm Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji only. According to Gurbaani Qoute

"Amritu Eko Naamu Hae Doojaa Amritu Naahi"
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=32833

Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=32833
Thru Khande Ki Pohal one gets connected to a Sabadu only.This way taking Khande Ki Pohul has its specific significance for becoming any Sikh A KHAALSAA.

Thanks for your kind reply
Interfaith requires more sub-categories. If you create some, this thread might just fit in there appropriately.

This thread was moved to the general section Interfaith Categories There it will stay for the time being.
