CHANDIGARH: Her one-year old battle with the dreaded disease of cancer finally ended on Tuesday afternoon when Surinder Badal, wife of Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal died after spending over 12 days in Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), here.

The 73-year old matriarch would be cremated on Wednesday at the family's native village, Badal in Muktsar district- which falls in the Malwa heartland where the scourge of cancer has spread wide. The Badal family took her body by road to the village directly from PGI, where she was declared dead at around 2 pm.

As the news spread, cabinet ministers, top bureaucrats and police officers besides several senior politicians rushed to PGI to offer their condolences to the CM, his son and deputy CM Sukhbir Badal, Sukhbir's MP wife, Harsimrat Badal, son in law and Punjab food minister Adaish Pratap Singh Kairon and Badal's daughter Preneet Kaur, who were with Surinder Badal during her last moments. Both Badal and Sukhbir has been camping at PGI for the last 12 days ever since her condition deteriorated, following complications.

Jathedar of Takht Keshgarh Sahib, Anandpur, Bhai Tirlochan Singh, offered prayers before her body was carried out of the ICU ward to the ambulance on a stretcher.

Surinder Badal's cancer of small intestines was detected nearly a year ago and she was taken to USA thrice, for treatment in a New York hospital. She was brought to PGI on May 12 after acute complications did not allow her to travel to USA. `The doctors told the family last night that there was no hope left now,'' said family sources. She is survived by her elder sister Savinder Grewal and brother Inderjit Singh besides her immediate family, including five grandchildren.

Badal when he netred politics was a MEEK soft spoken man who often stood right in the back rows or sat in the second thord row seats..NEVER at the FRONT. Then Bibi badal took over..and began to PUSH him...push real hard..and badal became the "man" he is now....this death he loses his biggest pillar after he just lost Manpreet badal... The Controlling QUEEN is dead..and the upstart Prince of Punjab is too brash for anyones good..and uncontrollable...Manpreet has his work cut out for him...

The Best and ONLY True Legacy for Bibi badal would be a HUGE OUTLAY on CANCER in PUNJAB...Bring up AWARENESS, UPGRADE Medical Facilities, Provide Clean WATER, ban all pesticides, pollutants, Come down Hard on Food adulteration, chemical food preparations such as fake milk, fake ghee, fake sweetmeats, fake medicines.
BibI Badal had the PUNJAB GOVT footing her HUGE MEDICAL BILL IN USA...whiel the Common Punjabi farmer either mortgages or outright sells his emagre lands and other small proprties in a bid to seek a cure..and almost always FAILS..DEATH to the Victim and FINANCIAL RUIN to the Family that survives. Entire Villages are full of several cancer victims in each HOUSE....I hope Badal senses the Pain he feels is in every house in Punjab...rangesingh:
