SGPC accused of creating a row

PATIALA: Sikh Nation Organization (SNO) has accused the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) of creating avoidable controversy over the issuance of Sikh calendar. Members of SNO on Wednesday claimed the calendar deserves to be discarded in totality to end confusion on the issue.

MS Randhawa, president of the Sikh body, said that leaders controlling the affairs of SGPC took shortsighted and imprudent decision in 2003 to impose the semi-prepared Sikh calendar without proper scrutiny. SNO alleged that the calendar coined by Purewal with unjustly incorporated changes in Sikh tradition was given the name of Nanakshahi calendar only to provide it emotional acceptability in the Sikh fraternity, while the makers of the calendars were well aware about its shortcomings. "Sikh and Khalsa Samats were already in practice, coinciding with the birth of Guru Nanak and foundation of Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh, and Sikhs were celebrating the events according to the lunar calendar as per tradition that dates back to the time of Sikh gurus, the source of all divine and worldly wisdom for Sikhs," said Randhawa.

The article speaks with the voice of the 3rd column in the controversies over the Sikh Calendar, to coin a phrase, which has been rarely discussed. But is firmly in place, behind the scenes until very recently. This is the group that would go back to the Bikram Samvat calendar. Now they are heard more clearly.

Point of view 1 is to keep the Purewal 2003 Nanakshahi Calendar. BTW this was thoroughly reviewed worldwide by many Sikh sangats and organizations and it was received enthusiastically. It was released in 2003 under Jathedar ji Vendanti. So the SNO is pulling the ear in making the claim that the panth had a calendar forced upon them.

Point of view 2 supports the amended Nanakshahi Calendar which should really be called the amended Bikram Samvat Calendar. It retains the sangrands, and bases movable celebrations and gurpurabs according to the siderial calendar set forth in Benares by astrologers each year. By doing this some years will celebrate some gurpurabs for the same guru 2 times, confusing everyone. In other years there will be no gurpurab at all for that guru. Guru Gobind Singh Parkash Diwas case in point.

There is a problem with this because you will see that the astrologers in Benares have not yet figured out when 2011 (actually the year is not 2011 but Samvat 2069) starts for certain. Therefore, all other days dependent on that s tarting point have not been identified. I.E. we don't know when various movable gurpurabs will fall this year.

Point of view 3 is to go back to the original Bikram Samvat calendar which was the impetus for the Purewal revisions in the first place. It has all the short comings of Nanakshahi 2010 amended, and more. This is what Damdami Takhsal, and other purists among the leadership, were lobbying for back in 1999 when Purewal began his work, and the purists have held out until this moment in time to damn both the Nanakhahi 2003 Purewal, and the so-called Nanakshahi 2010 (amended Bikrami Samvat).

Confusion? Yes! Is it innocent confusion? No!

SPN ADMIN JI..YOU have got the Bulls EYE on this one. This is "Controlled confusion" remote controlled to add fuel to the fires already burning..with only one AIM..to DESTROY whatever remnants remain of the Nanakshai calendar and RETURN tot he RSS FOLD Bikram Samvat of Benares in TOTO...as was the case in 2002 and earlier...No body ahs evner heard of this SNO before....mushroom org born out of wedlock between unknown persons..
