Fireworks display to stay at Sikh Gurdwara Sri Harmandir Sahib

Having contemplated replacing traditional fireworks display with a laser show at Harmandar Sahib for the past couple of years, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has dropped the idea for the time being.
SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar told Hindustan Times that they had no plans to switch over to the laser technology as a replacement for fireworks at Harmandar Sahib during Bandi Chhod Divas (or Diwali) and Guru Ram Dass’ birth anniversary.

“The laser show can be a good substitute, but our hands are tied as we could not get in touch with top-notch experts,“ said Makkar, adding that they were considering using quality crackers which caused relatively less pollution.
As of now, the SGPC is making use of locally-made firecrackers. Besides emitting harmful pollutants, they pose a threat to the safety of lakhs of devotees.
Splinters of one such cracker, which went off target, left two women injured in the Parikarma on the occasion of Guru Ram Dass’ birth anniversary last week.
The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has already warned that the alarming rise in level of pollution in the vicinity of Harmandar Sahib is adversely affecting rare artefacts. Pollution caused by traffic, besides the use of diesel-based power generators inside and outside the premises, has aggravated the problem.
Balwinder Singh, Reader in the Guru Ram Das School of Planning, GNDU, said keeping in view the growing level of pollution around Harmandar Sahib, the SGPC should discontinue fireworks display.
