Bhai Dharam Singh was born in Hastnapur to father Sant Ram and Matta Sabho. He was among the first five members to be initiated into the Khalsa order. He was the second one to answer Guru Gobind Singh call and offered his head to the Guru. He remained in the company of his great Master when he went to Nanded where he breathed his last in 1708.
About Bhai Dharam Singh :- Excerpts from : (Zafarnama Dhaya Singh Emperor Aurangzeb) In the jungle Guru Ji met two Pathan brothers Nabi Khan and Ghani Khan who were dressed in blue, he asked them to prepare similar clothes for him. In the mean time Guru Ji sent for one of his followers who lived near by called Sayyad Inayat Khan. Guru Ji entrusted him with a letter that wasaddressed to Emperor Aurangzeb for safe keeping. Using the blue garments Guru Ji disguised himself as Uch-Ka-Pir (a holy man from Uch) and with his companions Nabi Khan and Ghani Khan on one side and Bhai Dharam Singh and Bhai Mann Singh on the other they set of towards the village of Ghulal. This letter is called "Zafarnama" - the Epistle of Victory. Written in Persian verse it was sent from dina in 1705 through two Sikhs, Bhai Dhaya Singh and Bhai Dharam Singh. It was intentionally not entrusted to the Emperors messangers because of the nature of the contents and because Guru Ji wanted to know the immediate reaction on reading it from his Sikhs. They stayed at the house of Bhai Jetha Ji. It was some months before the Sikhs met with the Emperor.Guru Ji had instructed Bhai Dhaya Singh to speak boldly and fearlessly before Aurangzeb when handing the letterthis he did. The Emperor read the letter and fwlt that the Guru was a highly intelligent, truthful and fearless warrior. He was nearly 91 years of age and his body strated to tremble from feelings of remorse and regretfulness at what he had done in his life time. Again he put pen to paper and wrote a letter to Guru Ji stating his inability to come to the north and requesting that Guru Ji meet him in Ahmadnagar at his earliest convenience. The letter was sent through royal messengers. |

| | | | | Re: Today in Sikh History : Index 4th November, 1982Akali Dal organized morcha in Delhi during the 9th Asian Games. Haryana police harassed Sikhs on their way to Delhi. No rank, status, or position mattered. All Sikhs were thoroughly harassed and made to feel foreigners in their own home. Nov. 4-30, Sikhs were insulted during the 9th Asian Games held at Delhi. The moderate Sikh Party, the Akali Dal, had organised a morcha and announced its intention to court arrests on this occasion. The Indian Government, therefore, ordered the search and humiliation of all Sikhs travelling to Delhi. Sikh passengers were pulled out of buses and trains and were searched by the para military forces and police. Even old men, women and children were not spared. Sikh army officers in their uniforms, retired Army generals, senior civil and police officers, High Court Judges, who were per chance carrying their identity cards, were also stopped, searched, insulted and badly humiliated. Nine main barricades and check posts guarded by armed policemen and para-military forces, were established in Haryana province. All Sikhs were treated as if they were a part of an enemy's army who were going to attack India with most dangerous weapons. Sikh women were also searched by male police officials. Even when the Indian Parliament was told about this humiliation of the Sikh officers of the military, judiciary and administration, etc., but no action was taken against. | | | | | Re: Today in Sikh History : Index 5th November, 1978Killing of Sikhs took place in Delhi. The Delhi police fired at a Sikh protest procession and killed four Sikhs including the President of the Akali Party's Delhi unit, Jathaedar Awtar Singh Kohli, Sardar Mohinder Singh, and Sardar Gobind Singh. The police sieged three Sikh shrines of Delhi. Entrance to the Sikh shrines was banned after a period of 200 years. The curfew around the Sikh shrines was not lifted until November 7 when a secret Akali meeting decided to send a band of the senior-most Akali Ministers of the Punjab to violate the curfew orders. -Ref. | | | | | Re: Today in Sikh History : Index 10th November, 1880First ever Punjabi weekly, "Gurumukhi Akhbar," was started by Singh Sabha, to popularise teh Sikh ideals.
Further reading: Education was considered to be the key to modern awakening and this was one of Bhai Gurmukh Singh's persistent
concerns. As early as June 1882, a proposal had been made to set up a Sikh college. Soon after the establishment of
the Khalsa Diwan Amritsar in April 1883, Bhai Gurmukh Singh formally placed the motion before it at its special meeting
held in June 1883. It was taken up more vigorously later by the Khalsa Diwan Lahore. Bhai Gurmukh Singh enlisted the
co-operation of some government officials, and a Khalsa College Establishment Committee was constituted with Colonel
W.R.M. Holroyd, Director of Public Instruction, as chairman and Mr William Bell, a professor of Government College,
Lahore, as secretary. The efforts of Bhai Gurmukh Singh and other leaders of the Singh Sabha bore fruit and the
cornerstone of the college was laid at Amritsar on 5 March 1892 by Sir James B. Lyall, Lieutenant-Governor of the
Punjab.
To disseminate widely the Singh Sabha creed, Gurmukh Singh launched, one after another, the Gurmukhi Akhbar
(1880), the Vidyarak (1880), the Khalsd (1885), the Sudhararak (1886) and the Khalsa Gazette (1886). These were
among the first newspapers and periodicals in Punjabi, and besides serving the cause of religious reform, they gave birth
to a new literary idiom in the language. Bhai Gurmukh Singh also published, in 1889, a jantri or almanac, called Gur
Baras, the years of the Lord, the first of its kind in Punjabi in Gurmukhi script. Another work by him is Bharat di Itihaas, a
history of India in Punjabi. He also wrote Gurbani Bhavarth, a glossary in simple Punjabi to make the gurbani of the Guru
Granth Sahib intelligible to the common man. The work, however, remained unpublished. Bhai Gurmukh Singh married twice, but had no children. He died of a heart attack on 24 September 1898 at Kandaghat, Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=17826 in Shimla Hills, where he had gone to see the Maharaja of Dhaulpur for a donation for Khalsa College, Amritsar.
