| | | | | Health Benefits of Yoga Yoga In Dealing With Stress
The only silver lining to the dark and gloomy clouds of stress and stress induced other problems is that we have a tool with us, which, if we use properly can effectively deal with the problems of stress. The tool obviously is yoga.
Yoga helps us in developing better control of our breathing habits. It also teaches us what the right posture for the body should be. Knowledge of both these things is critical to keep the stress levels down. A regulated breathing ensures that all parts of the body receive the required amount of blood flow and along with it the necessary levels of oxygen.
The brain therefore is never deprived of what it needs most - oxygen. A steady supply of oxygen and nutrients, also carried by our blood through the veins, ensures that the brain is always stays at its prime level and performs how it is supposed to. With better performance of our brain not only is it better able to tackle stress, but there are also fewer chances of being stressed as the work you are doing will be of a better quality. The posture of your body ensures that there are reduced levels of stress on your body. Often because our sitting and standing positions at work or at home are not quite right, there is a negative effect not only on the body but also on our minds. When the body starts to send problem signals to the brain, it gets more involved in tackling those problems than deal with the issues that are already there. With a better sitting and standing posture we can negate such problems.

Yoga is an excellent way of keeping fit, mobile and alert. Health improvement aspects are all well known and are now widely recognised in the western world, especially since mid 1960s Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=26361
Yoga also developed as more than just a way to improve health and control the mind.
It had been recognised and developed many centuries before Patanjali. However the object then was spiritual. The limbs discussed by Patanjali, in Astanga (Eight-limbed) Yoga or Hatha Yoga are discussed in the Bhagavad_Gita (a Vedic scripture). The same system was later known as Raja Yoga, and is referred to as such in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, but Guru ji indicates that the essence of Raja Yoga (ie the spiritual benefits)can be directly attained through Naam Simran and Naam Jap, without going through lower steps like pranayamas or asanas.
It requires single-pointed concentration, or fixation, upon an object - the object being Satguru, with respect to Sikhi. This leads into meditiation, and finally complete absorption into, or oneness with, Satguru. This phase is dealt with in the upper three limbs ( dharana, dhyana, and samadhi).
