Sandstones, sand found in 700 bags of wheat

Ferozepur, June 28
Sandstones and sand in a large quantity were found in about 700 bags of wheat when random sampling of the stocks lying in different godowns of Punsup here was carried out by a team of officials of the department over the past few days.

A scam running into crores of rupees has surfaced in this district following the detection of sandstones and sand in bags of wheat, allegedly filled by a section of the officials of Punsup. The officials replaced wheat with sandstones and sand to make money.

A committee comprising the Deputy Director, Food and Supplies, the District Food and Supplies Controller and the Tehsildar, Ferozepur, was constituted by Deputy Commissioner KK Yadav to probe the matter.It submitted its report to him and Adesh Partap Kairon, Minister of Food and Supplies, Punjab, today.

A senior Punsup official said only random sampling had been done. About four lakh bags of wheat were lying in Punsup godowns located in Ferozepur city where this scam took place.

The scam came to light a few days ago when officials of the Food Corporation of India, who were loading bags of wheat onto a goods train, noticed that there were sandstones and sand in the wheat.

The FCI officials found sandstones and sand in 161 bags out of a total 180 which were being unloaded from a truck to be loaded onto the goods train. After that about 11,000 bags were unloaded from the train .

The Congress has already demanded a CBI probe into the matter.

Do you see this as a possible act of sabotage? Economic sabotage or even a terrorist act? Or more a problem of local mismanagement?

Three PUNSUP officials suspended

In the infamous soil-for-wheat scam, the Punjab Government on Friday suspended three Punjab State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited (PUNSUP) officials — Surinder Singh, Jagir Singh, Sham Lal and chargesheeted a former district manager — for their alleged involvement in the scam that hit the State last week.

Authorities have also issued a show cause notice to district manager Suresh Kumar. “The three officials in the rank of inspectors were placed under suspension and a former district manager has been chargesheeted after over 700 gunny bags of wheat were found filled with sandstones and sand,” said an officials in the State's Food And Supplies Department.A surprise stock check by the officials of Food and Supplies Department on June 25 at the warehouses of State Government food grain procurement agency PUNSUP brought to the fore the scam.

Available information suggests that the scam was worth millions of rupees as the officials concerned could have siphoned off hundreds of quintals of wheat by filling the bags with soil.The Food and Supplies Department officials are investigating that for how long this malpractice had been continuing.
