Fourth Mehl:




ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਜੋ ਸਿਖੁ ਅਖਾਏ ਸੁ ਭਲਕੇ ਉਠਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥

gur sathigur kaa jo sikh akhaaeae s bhalakae outh har naam dhhiaavai ||

One who calls himself a Sikh of the Guru the True Guru shall rise in the early morning hours and meditate on the Lord's Name.


ਉਦਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਭਲਕੇ ਪਰਭਾਤੀ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਵੈ ॥

oudham karae bhalakae parabhaathee eisanaan karae anmrith sar naavai ||

Upon arising early in the morning, he is to bathe, and cleanse himself in the pool of nectar.


ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪੈ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਪਾਪ ਦੋਖ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਵੈ ॥

oupadhaes guroo har har jap jaapai sabh kilavikh paap dhokh lehi jaavai ||

Following the Instructions of the Guru, he is to chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. All sins, misdeeds and negativity shall be erased.


ਫਿਰਿ ਚੜੈ ਦਿਵਸੁ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਵੈ ਬਹਦਿਆ ਉਠਦਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥

fir charrai dhivas gurabaanee gaavai behadhiaa outhadhiaa har naam dhhiaavai ||

Then, at the rising of the sun, he is to sing Gurbani; whether sitting down or standing up, he is to meditate on the Lord's Name.


ਜੋ ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਧਿਆਏ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

jo saas giraas dhhiaaeae maeraa har har so gurasikh guroo man bhaavai ||

One who meditates on my Lord, Har, Har, with every breath and every morsel of food - that GurSikh becomes pleasing to the Guru's Mind.




ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥
jis no dhaeiaal hovai maeraa suaamee this gurasikh guroo oupadhaes sunaavai ||
That person, unto whom my Lord and Master is kind and compassionate - upon that GurSikh, the Guru's Teachings are bestowed.

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਧੂੜਿ ਮੰਗੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਕੀ ਜੋ ਆਪਿ ਜਪੈ ਅਵਰਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
jan naanak dhhoorr mangai this gurasikh kee jo aap japai avareh naam japaavai ||2||
Servant Nanak begs for the dust of the feet of that GurSikh, who himself chants the Naam, and inspires others to chant it. ||2||

ma 4 ||

Fourth Mehl:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਆਪਣਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

sathigur saeveeai aapanaa paaeeai naam apaar ||

Serving his True Guru, one obtains the Naam, the Name of the Infinite Lord.


ਭਉਜਲਿ ਡੁਬਦਿਆ ਕਢਿ ਲਏ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥

bhoujal ddubadhiaa kadt leae har dhaath karae dhaathaar ||

The drowning person is lifted up and out of the terrifying world-ocean; the Great Giver gives the gift of the Lord's Name.


ਧੰਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਸੇ ਸਾਹ ਹੈ ਜਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥

dhhann dhhann sae saah hai j naam karehi vaapaar ||

Blessed, blessed are those bankers who trade the Naam.


ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਸਿਖ ਆਵਦੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਘਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

vanajaarae sikh aavadhae sabadh laghaavanehaar ||

The Sikhs, the traders come, and through the Word of His Shabad, they are carried across.


ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਭਈ ਤਿਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

jan naanak jin ko kirapaa bhee thin saeviaa sirajanehaar ||2||

O servant Nanak, they alone serve the Creator Lord, who are blessed by His Grace. ||2||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਕਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

sathigur kae jeea kee saar n jaapai k poorai sathigur bhaavai ||

The sublime state of the True Guru is not known; no one knows what pleases the Perfect True Guru.




ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਂ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਰਤੈ ਜੋ ਸਿਖਾਂ ਨੋ ਲੋਚੈ ਸੋ ਗੁਰ ਖੁਸੀ ਆਵੈ ॥

gurasikhaan andhar sathiguroo varathai jo sikhaan no lochai so gur khusee aavai ||

Deep within the hearts of His GurSikhs, the True Guru is pervading. The Guru is pleased with those who long for His Sikhs.




ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਖੈ ਸੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਨਿ ਸੁ ਜਪੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਂ ਕੀ ਘਾਲ ਸਚਾ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

sathigur aakhai s kaar kamaavan s jap kamaavehi gurasikhaan kee ghaal sachaa thhaae paavai ||

As the True Guru directs them, they do their work and chant their prayers. The True Lord accepts the service of His GurSikhs.




ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਂ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਕੰਮੁ ਕਰਾਇਆ ਲੋੜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

vin sathigur kae hukamai j gurasikhaan paasahu kanm karaaeiaa lorrae this gurasikh fir naerr n aavai ||

But those who want the GurSikhs to work for them, without the Order of the True Guru - the Guru's Sikhs shall not come near them again.




ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਗੈ ਕੋ ਜੀਉ ਲਾਇ ਘਾਲੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥

gur sathigur agai ko jeeo laae ghaalai this agai gurasikh kaar kamaavai ||

One who works diligently for the Guru, the True Guru - the GurSikhs work for him.




ਜਿ ਠਗੀ ਆਵੈ ਠਗੀ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਇ ਤਿਸੁ ਨੇੜੈ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

j thagee aavai thagee outh jaae this naerrai gurasikh mool n aavai ||

One who comes to deceive, who rises up and goes out to deceive - the GurSikhs shall never come near him.




ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥

breham beechaar naanak aakh sunaavai ||

Nanak proclaims and announces this wisdom of God.




ਜਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁ ਮੰਨੇ ਕੰਮੁ ਕਰਾਏ ਸੋ ਜੰਤੁ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

j vin sathigur kae man mannae kanm karaaeae so janth mehaa dhukh paavai ||2||

One who is not pleasing to the Mind of the True Guru may do his deeds, but that being will only suffer in terrible pain. ||2||




ਮਃ ੫ ॥

ma 5 ||

Fifth Mehl:


ਸਿਖਹੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਿਆਰਿਹੋ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ॥

sikhahu sabadh piaariho janam maran kee ttaek ||

O Sikhs, love the Word of the Shabad; in life and death, it is our only support.




ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਏਕ ॥੨॥

mukh oojal sadhaa sukhee naanak simarath eaek ||2||

Your face shall be radiant, and you shall find a lasting peace, O Nanak, remembering the One Lord in meditation. ||2||



ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ਘਰੁ ੨

aasaa mehalaa 5 asattapadheeaa ghar 2

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl, Ashtapadees, Second House:






ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਿਖ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ॥

sathigur saahu sikh vanajaarae ||

The True Guru is the Banker, and His Sikhs are the traders.




ਪੂੰਜੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਖਾ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਮ੍ਹਾਰੇ ॥੭॥

poonjee naam laekhaa saach samhaarae ||7||

Their merchandise is the Naam, and meditation on the True Lord is their account. ||7||





ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

aasaa mehalaa 4 ||

Aasaa, Fourth Mehl:

ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤੇ ਸਤਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

raamo raam naam sathae sath guramukh jaaniaa raam ||

True, True is the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam; the Gurmukh knows the Lord.


ਸੇਵਕੋ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਗਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਚੜਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

saevako gur saevaa laagaa jin man than arap charraaeiaa raam ||

The Lord's servant is the one who commits himself to the Guru's service, and dedicates his mind and body as an offering to Him.


ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿਆ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਸਰਧਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਕ ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

man than arapiaa bahuth man saradhhiaa gur saevak bhaae milaaeae ||

He dedicates his mind and body to Him, placing great faith in Him; the Guru lovingly unites His servant with Himself.


ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥੁ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਏ ॥

dheenaa naathh jeeaa kaa dhaathaa poorae gur thae paaeae ||

The Master of the meek, the Giver of souls, is obtained through the Perfect Guru.


ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਖੁ ਸਿਖੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਏਕੋ ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਚਲਾਏ ॥

guroo sikh sikh guroo hai eaeko gur oupadhaes chalaaeae ||

The Guru's Sikh, and the Sikh's Guru, are one and the same; both spread the Guru's Teachings.


ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਮੰਤੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਦੇਵੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੮॥੨॥੯॥

raam naam manth hiradhai dhaevai naanak milan subhaaeae ||8||2||9||

The Mantra of the Lord's Name is enshrined within the heart, O Nanak, and we merge with the Lord so easily. ||8||2||9||
