The Chardi Kalaa
Sikh Community Center is introducing an instruction program to meet some of the needs that has been felt for a long time for young Sikhs growing up here in America. The initial set of classes will cover the language of Gurbani and conversational Punjabi. Also under consideration are classes in devotional
Sikh songs in English, similar to those sung in the Chardi Kalaa Divaan, as well as in Gurbani Kirtan. The classes will be held on Sunday mornings from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Chardi Kalaa center. Fees will be $50 per semester, $25 for additional members from the same family. Please fill in and return the enclosed application form along with the fees as soon as possible so that we can make plans accordingly.
Understanding Gurbani.
Sundays 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. This is an introductory course to the language of Gurbani, which is of course quite different from current spoken Punjabi. The objective is to enable students to get some understanding of kirtan and paath, so that they can appreciate and put into practice some of the beautiful teachings of the Gurus that are our most valuable heritage.
We will try to build up a vocabulary of the most frequently used words in Gurbani, cover basic syntax and usage, and discuss the
Sikh concepts behind some of the terminology. We will also touch on the cultural and mythological background to some of the baani. Selections from popular shabads and nitnem baanis will be used as a framework. The medium of instruction is English.
There will be some homework. Students will be expected to review vocabulary lists, and spend a few minutes each day reading some Gurbani with meanings.
Students should have a strong desire to understand Gurbani, be able to read Gurmukhi, and understand some spoken Punjabi. Ages 14 and above (slightly younger children who believe they are ready can be accommodated).
