3 days ago I received SMS from sikhnetwork that world is in acute food crisis
and people should now not waste food

Food prices have risen more than 40% in the past 12 months. And the sharp rise has, in part, led to food shortages that have prompted massive riots in Egypt, Haiti and China. And now the UN is forecasting more food shortages.

With about 40% of the world's agricultural land seriously degraded and oil prices at record levels, prices of feed poultry and dairy cows are causing prices of wheat, soybean and maize to skyrocket.

With overall crop outputs lagging demand, desperate farmers who wish to capitalize off record prices are now using a wide array of organic and inorganic fertilizers to help boost production.

Re: World food crisis

brother kds, dont panic!

food prices go up...population increase slows down....food prices go back down.....population picks back up.
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=21145

its a cycle.

but if you are a farmer...pull out the johnnie walker cause you are sitting pretty at 10-15$ a bushell for wheat...if you were lucky enough as not have your crop destroyed by that pesky mother we like to call 'nature'.

ps: dont invest in agriculture its overspeculated.... especially fertilizer manufacturers (like agrium, potash and CF industries)

Short oil...its price is inflated with a good dose of spectulation. There are good prospects in some ETF's like DUG (nyse) and even a horizon fund like HOD (both ultrashort oil by 2x). DUG also gives you a decent 3% yeild.

wherever there is struggle for existance there is oppurtunity to amass fortune.

muahahaha

It is a concern who cares about others, and it is joke for those who dont. When issues are raised, solutions are found.

Re: World food crisis

Mkm,

Please… it is a serious matter…no doubt about it…money is involved (and anything involving money is a serious matter these days) but panic will not solve it, nor will remorse/sorrow and sorry neither will prayer…what will solve it? … INVESTMENT

If you took the time to actually read what I wrote…you would have been able to pick out a solution to the current problem (shorting oil…is the easiest way to reduce its speculative glazed price, immediately, and in turn reduce the price of grain)

For someone so adament about solutions, what ideas have you purposed so far?

Inflationary pressures drive up food prices throughout history in cycles…this is just another cycle.

Market cycles are sociological, economical and historical facts no matter how cold hearted and morally bankrupt they sound. Food shortages are no different…an ever abundant supply of food since the green revolution in the 60’s has led to large unsustainable population growths (just to give a figure…population has more than DOUBLED since 1960 not to mention that per energy capita consumption of the average human has also gone up…so all this should come as little surprise). And if this sounds too Malthusian…you can add more detail and push around semantic rhetoric but the outcome of the debate will just leave us with the cold facts that people generally prefer to ignore in times of difficulty.

Let the market decide what to do next…it is, from what I hear….a self correcting entity.

Peace and please,
Enjoy the ride

this is the price of wheat over the past 30 years adjusted for core inflation in 2007 dollers?

can anyone see the cycle? and what its related to?
the current bullish trend has only been going on for about 5-6 years.

the slow down of the 80's hammered prices until they started to go back up. they'll come back down eventually.

Re: World food crisis

Dear sinister

Its good to hear something from you

The solutions are their but problem is world will never accept it

The main problem of earth is not over population It is mainly population imbalance
On one hand sooth asia china etc are bursting with population

On the other hand countries like Russia,australia,canada etcare controlling vast land resource .If these countries will allow large scale immigration of farmers then food production could go up.But it is not going to happen because ethnic,linguistic,cultural pride is too much.I find it quite surprising when people call themself Humanist but they and speak against religion as it divides humans but hardly any of them speak
against dividing this world in countries.

As far as energy is concerened developed countries should reduce consumption of energy.Just check the retail price of US petrol and india It is around rs.36 in Us while it is rs.47 in India.where every other commodity is expensive their petrol is cheap
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=21145

why?

Countries like USA should develop public transport ,provide pick up and dropping facilties for employees just like Indian BPO and It companies as it will save much
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=21145
more oil

But No one is going to implement these solution

AREEBBBBAAAA , kds ji lives!

good to hear from you as well.

Well there are two solutions;

Economical and practical
Or
Philosophical and imaginary

Hypothetically we should all build rocket ships and launch every welfare-collecting citizen, to different corners of our galaxy to hunt for aliens.
Economically, we should just use all those rockets as high-speed crop dusters.

I fail to see how dissolving religious boundaries or for that matter national boundaries will have any impact in achieving any sort of sustainability (that is the operating word).

The question is about achieving equilibrium…dissolving the borders would just shift the equilibrium and not abolish it considering the world itself is a finite entity.

Now, onto your second manifesto, which seems to be a grudge against humanists and their particular ways of wretched critique. READ ON…

As to why humanists reject religious division and not so much nationality is because most humanists are idiots. Some may fail to realize that every institution kills or at least has the capacity to do (maybe that the reason they call marriage an institution… ). They moan and bemoan when it is religion more often than the state.
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=21145
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=21145

However, how naïve and wrong it is to say that humanists don’t oppose the nation state? Read anything by Noam Chosmky and you will feel differently. Humanism is an outskirt of Libertarianism...they literally go hand in hand. A true humanist will be a libertarian at heart or the other extreme (a communist) or someone completely confused such myself who likes to jump on a bandwagon, cause its cool.

However, where there is bias, there may be a rational explanation to explain why the bias exists.

Nationality mostly kills for money, profit and natural resources. Religious institutions kill for power but not on the basis of materialism (which they openly denounce) but dogma. One is a self-confessed criminal, the other, a psychopath, so humanists choose to give an easier time to the lesser of two evils. At least that’s how I see it.
And it doesn’t really matter if nationality kills more or less, what matters is; they kill for the right reasons (or they kill for reasons which are far less sinister than what religion kills for).

Also, most free states protect your beliefs no matter what they are; they are allowable as long as you don’t physically harm another citizen with those beliefs. This freedom is seldom seen under the confines of a religious institution. So, humanists, being anarchist, see this clear distinction. Thus, choose to elevate a secular institution, such as a state, over a religious institution… because it involves more freedom (many people of faith also prefer this as well… not just humanists).

Humanists may also see national pride as a counterweight to religious bravado…and because most humanists are atheists they see it within their interests to have the two separated and opposed.

Summary:
A state is more secular than a religious institution.

Hope that answered something
