World Sikh leaders appeal Sikhs to observe Guru Arjan Dev ji Martyrdom Day on June 16

NEW YORK, May 29, 2011- The Sikh organisations around the world have assailed Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC) for making arbitrary changes in the Nanakshahi calender issued in 2003 and hailed the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee for observing Sikh festivals as per the original calendar.

The American Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee(AGPC) and other Sikh bodies have hailed the Pakistan Government for granting VISA to Sikh devotees to celebrate the Martyrdom Day of Guru Arjan Dev ji on June 16 and not accepting VISA applications for June 5. The SGPC has made amendments in the Nanakshahi calendar and issued its new version in 2011 according to which the Martyrdom Day of Guru Arjan Dev is listed on June 5. The SGPC is celebrating the day on June 5 while Sikh organisations including Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Manangement Committee would observe the day on June 16.

Jaswant Singh Hothi and Pritpal Singh respectively President and coordinator AGPC, Paramjit Singh Sarna President Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Managenment Committee in a statement said that Pakistan Government and PSGPC has respected the sentiments of Sikhs around the world whereas SGPC is violating Sikh traditions by amending the Nanakshahi calender. They said that Nanakshahi Calender issued in 2011 by SGPC was brainchild of two persons and didnt represent the views of whole Sikh community. They said that it was unfortunate that so called religious leaders of Sikhs including SGPC president were not loyal to the community and are sabotaging the Sikh cause.

The other Sikh leaders which hailed the Pakistan Government decision of granting VISA for Gurpurb on June 16 included Kamaljit Singh Rai of German, Joga Singh and Raghubir Singh Purewal of Akhand Kirtani Jatha, Avtar Singh Sangha Kar Sewa Committee and Manmohan Singh President World Sikh Muslim Federation.

The Sikh leaders have urged the Sikh Sangat to celebrate the Martyrdom Day of Guru Arjan Dev ji on June 16 as per old Nanakshahi calendar.

I know of many,many Sikhs who will observe Maryardom Day of Guru Arjan Dev Ji on 16th of May.

When I walk on the hot marble floor around a Gurudwara in summer and it sears my foot skin, making me go back or stop.. I think about Guru Arjan Dev's martyrdom.

SPN will be observing the martyrdom day during the week surrounding June 16. Enough is enough!
