Closing the North York murder of a father of two teens depends on help from people who haven't come forward.

Jagtal Singh Kular, 55, was found shot dead around 9:15 p.m. Feb. 1 inside the Mann Enterprises variety store at a strip mall at 2400 Finch Ave. W., near Weston Rd.

Toronto homicide Det. Scott Purches urged Thursday for witnesses, and he suspects there may be a few people that were either leaving or entering the neighbouring North York Sikh Temple, who may have seen something.

"He had a family, he had two children, and we've been in contact with his brother," he said.

Purches said it's not clear yet if Kular was alone in the store at the time of his murder.

"This scene of the murder is right next to a Sikh temple," he said. "Mr. Kular was a member of the temple. He was well-known to the south Asian community.

"We're appealing to that community to come forward and provide any information," Purches said.

The day after the slaying, police seized a number of bags from the trunk of the car owned by the shop owner. Purches won't say what the substance was in the bags, but they underwent testing by forensic experts.

The owner was also attacked by two men and left with knife cuts about the body last November on Humberline Blvd. in north Etobicoke.

He told police then it was a robbery, but the case remains unsolved.

Purches said it's not clear at this point if that attack is related to the murder.

He said the store owner found Kular's body and called 911.

"We are investigating several possible motives at this point but we haven't narrowed down a specific one," he said.

Purches, however, said it's unknown if anything is missing from the store.

"We are working with the owner of the store to go through the inventory of the store to see if anything was taken," he said. "Right now, there's no indication anything was taken."
