Single mums group needs aid


THE Sikh Single Mothers Association Ipoh (SikhMAI) is in need of RM200,000 yearly to look after 150 single mothers and their children aged between a few months and 18 years.

Its president Amarjid Kaur said the association only had 26 donors contributing a total of about RM60,000 to support 40 single mothers on a monthly case-by-case basis.


“The trauma a woman goes through when she loses her companion and sole breadwinner for the family is unimagi- nable.


“She has to get hold of herself as quickly as possible because other lives, especially her children, depend on her. She has to keep her family together no matter what,” she said at the association’s first fundraising dinner at the Ipoh Town Hall recently.


Amarjid Kaur said SikhMAI was formed on Jan 7 last year after the Union of Perak Sikh Organisations undertook a study to identify poor students, their health problems and reasons why they performed badly in their studies.

The study also saw a comprehensive report on the plight of Sikh single mothers, which had persuaded single mothers to take up the challenge to set up a group.


“We hope the state government would be able to assist us as the association is in need of aid,” said Amarjid Kaur.


Guest of honour Datuk Chang Ko Youn, who is the Perak Chinese Affairs adviser to Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, said the state was aware of the social economic problems faced by the Sikh community, adding that for the first time in the history of Perak Budget, next year’s one had allocated RM500,000 for the community.

A very large proportion of these "single mums" are Imported brides from PUNJAB !! These face double jeopardy since they are ALL ALONE in a far off land where the husbands family holds all the "ropes"...these single mums face the Immigration Dept harsh rules...yearly Visas renewed after a lot of hassle/cost..no WORK of any kind permitted ( How to earn to support themsleves/their children ?? who cares..the Immigration Dept has no say..what you do....as long as you DONT WORK !!..any work..and immediate DEPORTATION is agrim possibility...
