Sat Sri Akaal!

Welcome to serious readers! Blogs are nice beginning places to reflect and to explore. The wisdom of others is often the trigger that sends me searching, thinking and learning in a serious way.

There isn't much here today because it is a beginning.

But my hope? That in the beginning wisdom will help us and not abandon us half-way down the road.

More coming. Please contribute. Stay in chardi kala.

Through endless ages, the mind has never changed
It has not lived or died, come or gone, gained or lost.
It isn’t pure or tainted, good or bad, past or future.
true or false, male or female. It isn’t reserved for
monks or lay people, elders to youths, masters or
idiots, the enlightened or unenlightened.
It isn’t bound by cause and effect and doesn’t
struggle for liberation. Like space, it has no form.
You can’t own it and you can’t lose it. Mountains.
rivers or walls can’t impede it. But this mind is
ineffable and difficult to experience. It is not the
mind of the senses. So many are looking for this
mind, yet it already animates their bodies.
It is theirs, yet they don’t realize it.

    He Is Not Hari

He is not Hari, He is not the Lord Siva.
    He is the Ultimate Cause,
In the Beyond of the Beyond,
    Transcending Blackness, Redness, and Whiteness,
    Immoveable.
    Try to understand:
He is not big, He is not small.
    He is Infinite Distance,
    Immovable,
    Transcending even
    Supreme Quiessence.

    Melt with the Heart Inside

    In the Four Eternal Vedas,
In the study and reading of scripts,
In sacred ashes and in Holy Writs
    And muttering of prayers
You will not find the Lord!
    Melt with the Heart Inside
    and proclaim the Truth.
Then you will join the Light-
    Life without servitude.

    How Do We Reconcile?

How do we reconcile His transcendence with His immanence?

He is self-created. And He knows what this means.

It would be foolish for us to say that we know what we mean when we say He is self-created. We don't know what this means. We have never seen nor experienced His self-creation. He is the seed and we are His creation.

We don't know His Nature. Only He understands His self-existence.

We can only know Him through His immanence. When we feel him nearby.

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55:8-9)

    The Heart Inside

    When we met, wooed, fell
    I couldn’t say everything
though I desired for you to
    know me
    honestly
    my mouth mumbled
    stumblingly
    the language of my swollen
    heart
    you listened as a deer
    in a silent meadow
the distant crack of a twig
    freezing you
    still as stone
    your ears filled the gaps
    in my stuttered speech
    your eyes defused my instinctive
    bluster
and broke my heart down to
    true discourse
    you saw through
    all outer ornamentation
    the heart inside

A Glimpse into the Mysticism of Guru Nanaak

Why does Guru Nanaak use so many terms from the Vedas when speaking his own distinctive view of sehaj? Professor Darwan Singh gives us this insight in a longer article on the nature of anhad.

Guru Nanak has copiously used esoteric termsand expressions such as sunn, shiv-shakti,trikuti, unman, sas-ghar-sur, bajar-kapat, ira-pingla-sukhmana, ajapa-jap, dasamduar,dhundhukar-niralam, sache amerapur, sachinagari, bij-mandar, sunn kala, satsar, panch-sabad, akul niranjan, purakh-arit, gagnantar dhanakh, sunn-samadh, bis-ikis, dubmue-vinpani, surat-dhun, nijghar, guptibani, anhat sunnand surat-sabad in all his compositions, specially in Ragas, Ramkali and Maru. These are purely mystical terms common to all Indian religions. As Nirharranjan Ray observes, Guru Nanak'suse of these tantric and yogic terms does not logically follow that he actually practised or inculcated their practice among his followers, since he has used them only as figures of speech or technical esoteric terms which were current and handy for use and were generally understood among advanced mystical orders of his time. He had actually many discussions during his travels and at Kartarpur with Yogis, Sadhus and ascetics of various mystical cults and denominations. Guru Nanak, in fact, had his own mystical message to convey to humanity and it was original with him and had no conceptual reference to the mystical philosophies of saivites, vaishnavites, yogies and even to Kabir, Dadu, Namdev and others, though many of them were accepted as allied co-mystics and their compositions included in the Adi-Granth more with a view to illustration and elaboration than to identification and syncretism.

    The JapuJi in Brief

    O Beloved,
    Thy name is Truth.
Thou art the Person who creates,
Thou art the humanity that hath no fear, no enmity.
Thy shining spiritual form is above time and space.
    Thou art immortality,
    Self-radiant Thou, O Love,
    Whom no birth can envisage
    And no death can remove.
    O Beloved,
    Sacred, secret is Thy Name,
And it opens like the flower of life in the kindness of the Guru.
    Thou art eternity
    The beginning Thou,
    The middle Thou,
    The end Thou,
    O Beloved,
Thou art beyond the wings of thought,
Thou art beyond the plumbings of silence.
Without Thee desire is not sated,
And all wise proposings sink with sorrow, nothing avails without Thee.
    Living with Thee,
    In Thee, O Great Love,
Consenting to be Thine for ever and ever is life’s fulfillment.
At the signal of Thy brow
    The forms rise,
    The souls are cast,
And glory gilds the brow even of the smallest, the meanest.
At the signal of Thy brow
Life is scattered in myriad positions, low and high,
And the souls rise up through pain and pleasure.
Some are the gifted beings in union with Thee
And others wander away, in their orbits, for ever and ever.
All is the superb creation of Thy eyes, O Beloved.
    Thou art.
    Glory, Glory, O Beloved.
    All are in Thy sunshine.
    Thieves, they say,
Cut-throats, robbers who live on the other’s blood,
    Sinners, slanderers, liars
They say these are mean and small
But when Thou shinest, all is beautiful,
I am attracted out of myself,
Fascinated by Thee I sacrifice myself to Thee,
    Glory, glory, O Beloved,
    All is well.
Thy palace is of music made,
On its walls the universe breaks in song,
Its sky is full of fair dancers,
The space resounds with the rhythm of soundless bliss,
The rivers and the continents sing Thy Name, O Beloved,
The stars beam with Naming Thee
    The mail-clad warrior is fierce,
But his heroic death on the battle-filed sings in faint
Tunes of love Thy anthems of personality-music.
    Thy dreams roll on.
Life is inspiration of Thy Beauty,
And they are the princes of Heaven who love, who love
In that still repose of soul, in the infinite rapture of silence.
When one I buds forth into a million,
When the voices of the rivers become my voice
And the cries of birds on wind my own,
And the leaves of the forest and the blades of grass my myriad tongues,
When one call of mine to Thee, O Beloved, becomes
a million, and that million becomes a million again,
And the wheel of the whole Universe moves as a wheel
In wheel of song Naming Thee, O Beloved, and ever
In harmony with the celestial music within my soul,
    Of Thy Love.
And my once saying “Thou” “Thou”, O Beloved, starts and countless ages of life saying “Thou”, “Thou”.
Of this music is made the ladder that rises up to Thee.
And they meet Thee who scaling this shining ladder cross the frontier.
Beyond, there, up, above, the highest art Thou, O Beloved,
And higher floats like the nimbus around Thee Thy song of Naam,
And the entrance unto Thy Palaces is according to the assonance of one’s soul; they enter whom Thou callest,
And the smiths that make men of themselves toil hard at their craft.
They cast and recast their souls in the image of Thee, O Beloved,
From near and far, it is the music of life that ascends to Thee.
    Born of waters,
    We children of earth
Hear news of Thee from the winds.
Day and night nurse all life.
According to the action of each soul are appointed places for all, be they near or far,
Those who Name Thee, Beloved, are perfected,
Bright are the faces of the victors who have learnt to live in the maddening music of Thy Presence, O Love, my Love.

    The World Is Sound

Sometimes on a blog, you will see a link to the blog of another person. I was searching the net for anything about Bliss and Sikhism. I found the blog of Sat Darshan Khalsa.

    Sounds of Elevation

The link below is an mp3 download entitled Silence by the River.

    River Sounds

The audio file at first seems to be nothing. I even checked my audio to make sure it was not set to mute. In a while I heard rustling sounds, then boat sounds, then horns and a human voice -- but faint and tremulous, Silence!

The blog page contains an almost empty photograph of a riverbank, Emptiness!

    Photo

A lot of the talk in the forums I belong to has been about Silence. Apparently many of us on the planet are tiring of the chatter. The Universe is afterall a noisy place. Radio telescopes on earth pick up the sounds of cats purring, traffic, and all kinds of noise from earth that bounces off the atmosphere and tumbles back to the planet. So we are caught between the coming and going of our own noise. No wonder it is hard to find our Center, to feel Bliss. Our birthright -- but for all the noise.

Listen to the track, contemplate the riverside scene, cultivate Quiet -- if you can spare just a few moments. And read Sat Darshan's blog. A very insightful person, who shares his disappointment that we are separated from our inner Truth at so many turns in our days.

    Shshhhhh! Be still my Soul!

    Two Doves

Once I got around to creating my profile on SPN, the choice of an avatar was a choice to make. At first I thought, Why bother? But after a short while, I thought, A body without a face looks very weird. And I didn't want to use a picture of myself. So I finally chose a dove for an avatar. My very first avatar was an animated graphic of a dove.

What is an avatar? Oh, right! On forums of every kind, members choose a graphic image of some kind, one that they think captures their personality, spirit, soul in a image-- in the hope that the ineffable aspects of an identity will be more understandable than one can see in a photograph. Am I right about that? Let me know if this correct or incorrect.

So when no avatar, or a very abstract image is used, then that means....I am not sure. It could mean a lot of things.

Back to my avatar. Almost every image of Guru Nanaak includes somewhere 2 doves. Not all images of course, but a great many images of Nanaak do. I did not choose doves to represent Peace which is our typical understanding of a dove. I chose doves to honor Nanaak.

Update: Now I am using a picture of chatrikh(a) -- the songbird in Sriraag. Change of pace.

Legend tells us that doves hovered around Nanaak, their wings fluttering and creating air currents, in anticipation of receiving the Divine Presence, in anticipation of Naad. The vibration of the wings of doves resonates audibly, and sometimes the sound can be loud, almost like constant dull drum beats. Very rhythmic!

If you listen long enough to the sound of doves beating away at the air, you can't hear anything else. You become deaf to everything but this sound. Over and over they create an insistent vibration -- which connects with the vibration of the Universe -- Naad.

That is why I chose two doves.

    Nanaak in Baghdad

He charmed even the most mighty with his songs of love -- for all humanity and all of nature. He sang of an eternity that was greater than 7 universes and 7 planets.
On The Tomb of a Fakir

"Upon this slab of granite didst thou sit discoursing of love and holy light, O Guru Nanak! Prince among India's holy ones! What song didst thou sing to charm the soul of Iran! What peace from the Himalayas' lonely caves and forests didst thou carry to the groves and rose-gardens of Baghdad? What light from Badrinath's snowy peak didst thou bear to illuminate the heart of Bah, thy saintly Iranian disciple!...

"Eight fortnights did Bah hearken to thy words on Life and its Mystery, on the Path and the Spring Eternal, while the moon waxed and waned in the pomegranate groves beside the grass-covered Desert of the Dead! And after thou, O Nanak, didst depart for thy beloved Bharat, Bah, the fakir, spoke to none: he listened not to the voice of man. And his fame spread, far and wide, and the Shah of Iran came to pay him homage: but the holy fakir took no earthly treasure nor listened to the praise of kings and courtiers... "Thus lived he, lonely, devoted, thoughtful, for 60 years, sitting before the stone on which thy sacred feet had rested. And ere he left this house of avidya, he wrote these words on the stone: Here spake the Hindu Guru Nanak to fakir Bah, and for these 60 years, since the Guru left Iran, the soul of Bah has rested on the Master's Word, like a bee poised on a dawnlit honey rose".

Do we become like a bee poised on a dawnlit honey rose?

    Ram Das

As usual I have been absorbed in the paltriness of my own life, thinking it important, forgetting a greater obligation.

The birth date of Guru Ram Das dev ji has just passed and nowhere in the forum has he been honored. And I did not honor him either. For some reason his presence is always overtaken by Gurus Nanaak, Arjan Dev, and Gobind ji. Yet how profound his soul's connection to the Divine! This was recognized by the Bhats, an extended family or tribe of Hindu poets who saw in Ram Das the jyote, of the One Lord and Creator. Oneness of the Divine was the song of the Bhats.

Bhat Kirat -- ‘just as Angad was ever the part of Guru Nanak’s being so is Guru Ram Das of Amar Das" (Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji: Page 1405).

Praise unto Ram Das the Guru, the one who created you, established you.

    You are such a miracle!

The Creator has installed you on a throne.

Your Sikhs and all conscious people bow to you because you manifest God.

    You are unchanging, unfathomable, immeasurable.

    Your limit cannot be perceived.

Those who serve you with love are carried across the sea of existence.

5 obstacles cannot exist where you are.

The realm that you rule is the true place.

    True is your glory.

You are Nanak Angad and Amar Das the Guru.

Oh, when I recognized you, my soul was completed.

The power is there to call upon his guiding light. Snatam Kaur and Ganesha Singh in praise of Guru Ram Das.

    Looking for Something?

I am always right behind you
But turn around and you won't see me
I am never not with you
Why aren't you always with me?
    I am at the center
while you stay at the periphery
    I am there, too,
but you won't find me there.
    When you turn round
    the center stays behind you
Stand still while turning your gaze around
and look at what you're looking out of.

I found this on self discovery website that turned up one day when I was looking for definitions of Sanskrit words. The definitions were in a glossary in another place in the web site.

Why sadness? Those who wander in Maya do not meet the True Guru. They do not drink His bliss.
