Sukhwinder Singh’s animation feature is based on the life of Sikh martyr Bhai Taru Singh Animation is an interesting medium, with the power to attract irrespective of age, class or gender. “And we’re using it to reconnect with our roots,” says Sukhwinder Singh, an IT professional turned animation filmmaker whose animation feature, Bhai Taru Singh, deals with one of Sikh history’s young martyrs who sacrificed his life for religion.

“We live in a time where technology is our religion and where the youth have forgotten their past. Four years ago, we entered this field to create awareness on this issue through cinema, internet and animation,” says Singh, the CEO of Vismaad Mediatech Pvt Ltd in Mohali. Along with his Singapore based partner Bakhtawar Singh, Sukhwinder will be screening Bhai Taru Singh at the Tagore Theatre on June 26 and 27.
The film is expensive, with Singh having already spent Rs 1.5 crore. “It is a hand-drawn classic animation. We worked on two lakh paintings for the film and roped in professional voice artistes from cinema and theatre. Singers like Jaspinder Narula and Bhai Satwinder Singh of Delhi have sung the playback, along with a UK-based group called Tiger Style while Atul Sharma has composed the music,” says Sukhwinder. It is difficult to sell such films, he says, given that their niche market and the filmmaker often ends up relying on sponsors. “Now we've changed the marketing strategy: there will be screenings in cinema and auditoriums and DVD sales.”

Quiz him on the choice of subject and Sukhwinder points out that Bhai Taru Singh was only 24 when he chose martyrdom. “He resisted the Muslims and refused to give up his hair. In return they tortured him and knifed his scalp. Bhai Taru Singh can be an inspiration to the youth of today,” adds Sukhwinder.
