Over 2 decades on, historical monuments get a touch of care

The crumbling building of the historical Anglo-Sikh War Memorial and Museum on the banks of Ferozeshah canal is being repaired these days.

After more than two decades, the Punjab Heritage and Tourism Development Board has finally sanctioned funds — a total of Rs 4.07 crore — for the renovation of historical monuments in Ferozepur district. Besides the museum, the project also plans to carry out repair work at Husainiwala, the historical Multani Gate and other places, aiming to make Ferozepur a tourist centre so that those coming to Amritsar can be brought to this city too.

A total of Rs 1.23 crore is being spent on the museum to make kiosks, shops and an interpretation centre. The historical paintings are also being given a retouch.

Deputy Commissioner Kamal Kishore Yadav visited the site on Wednesday to take stock of the work and was “shocked” to see the guns of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s period in a dilapidated condition.

He ordered urgent repair of the weapons. The war memorial and museum has a huge area as green belt, but suffers from shortage of water. The DC also ordered installation of submersible pumps. Due to its poor condition, the historical place where Sikhs had defeated the British army in 1845 had ceased to draw visitors.

The DC claimed that the work would be completed by the end of December. There is a plan to give a topographical view of the wars taken place at different sites to visitors, which will take some time.

Rs 23.68 lakh will be spent on the memorial at Mudki village where another Anglo-Sikh war took place and another Rs 30.86 at Mishriwala village to renovate a war memorial there.

Besides, Rs 1.93 crore will be spent in Husainiwala, which will now host a light and sound show and have a tourist gallery and a museum. The old railway station would be repaired too and the retreat ceremony would be made more memorable, said the DC.

Funds to the tune of Rs 1 crore had been lying with the Husainiwala Memorial Trust for the last many years as its members never conducted a meeting. The money will now be used in the renovation project. The statues of martyrs Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev at the same site also need urgent repairs.

The memorial sites at Sabhraon village and the Saragadi gurdwara are also in a bad shape and have not even been whitewashed for years together.
Most of the historical gates of Ferozepur have vanished with time, but the Multani Gate still stands strong, though it needs repairs. In order to give it the same old look, work has been started here.

While the work on the war memorial will be completed by December, the rest of the projects will be over by the end of September.
