Surely hitting a child is not Eastern Value ?? The western press may be holier than thou...but here imho the father is indeed the scumbag. Incidentally they are prone to beating their wives as well and feel it si sanctioend by their religion.

Hitting -- a parent can lose his temper. Kicking? That is not eastern or western. It is abuse.

We don't know if the little boy tends to be a whiny prince. We don't know if the father is deeply discouraged by his illness and his own fatigue. We don't know... But kicking?

No excuse really...its abuse any which way we look at it...
as Peter Russel says...somebody is going to get hurt real bad....and its the kid here...

You are correct, there is a difference between disciplining and beating the hell out of a child.

Any parent/s who uses hitting, spanking or anyother kind of violent method to teach " a lesson" to his/her children is a child abuser, hence a scumbag. There is no excuse that an elder/parent when angry can hit. It would be only fair if the chilld could do the same when angry. This is a very common thing.

One more thing domestic violence by either spouse is also a NO,NO. It is not the Sikhi way although sadly it occurs daily in many households. Our Gurdwaras should play a role in creating awareness with warnings and its consequences and showing the solutions through Gurbani Vichaar rather than asking them to parrot Japji or any other part of Gurbani for 40 or so days and all would be fine. We should have professional marriage and parenting counselors in the Gurdwaras. This may also close the so called generation gap that we as parents blame our kids for.

In fact the bible promotes spanking.

"Do not withold discipline from a chlid. if you BEAT him with a ROD, he will not die. Thou shalt BEAT him with a ROD and deliver his soul from Hell"

Thanks to our visionary Gurus, no such non sense is propagated.

Lets follow the English parenting model then......

I'm not advocating beating children senseless but given that we have the highest rate of teenage pregnancy/ inter-youth killings in Europe here, despite being such a rich country. Plus the fact that large massess of the youth here are bordering on semi-illiteracy. I think people who read The "Currant Bun" (AKA The Sun) should keep a closer eye on their own doorstep.
