Dear Khalsa Ji,

This journey has brought me to 22nd Pauri of Anand Sahib. What I understand from it, I share with you all.

1. jy ko gur qy vymuKu hovY ibnu siqgur mukiq n pwvY ] jay ko gur tay vaimukh hovai bin satgur mukat na paavai.

If one turns away from the Guru, without Satguru liberation does not come.

My understanding:

Here Guru Sahib tells me that if I turn away or divert from the teaching of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, which are comprehensive, I will have no chance of liberation.

2. pwvY mukiq n hor QY koeI puChu ibbykIAw jwey ] paavai mukat na hor thai ko-ee puchhahu bibaykee-aa jaa-ay.

One cannot get liberated elsewhere too, one can go and ask this from those how have developed mental faculty for discrimination.

My understanding:

Guru Sahib repeats here for me what he has told me in the previous sentence.

To me it means that if I have a frame of mind which makes me follow a course in my life, which is different from the one described in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, then the same will happen no matter where I go to seek liberation; I will drift there also. In a way Guru Sahib is telling me that the mind in me that has resistance to the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib will always be with me no matter where I go. It is my frame of mind and not the teachings, which are the cause of my difficulties in getting liberated.

Wah-e-Guru.

3. Anyk jUnI Brim AwvY ivxu siqgur mukiq n pwey ] anayk joonee bharam aavai vin satgur mukat na paa-ay.

Many births in delusion one undergoes, with out the Sat Guru the individual does not get liberated.

My understanding:

Guru Sahib tells me about the importance of Satguru, which in my context is Sri Guru Granth Sahib. The guidance from Sri Guru Granth Sahib is a must to put me on the right path, which can lead me to ‘Mukti’.

4. iPir mukiq pwey lwig crxI siqgurU sbdu suxwey ] fir mukat paa-ay laag charnee satguroo sabad sunaa-ay.

At the feet of Satguru, listening to Shabad, the individual gets liberated.

My understanding:

Guru Sahib asks me to listen (not just hearing) to Shabad at the feet of Satguru to get liberated.

My Satguru is Nirakaar; where do I find the feet. May be at the time of our Guru Sahibs, one could be at their feet to learn and get liberated. Today I have only Sri Guru Granth Sahib, which enshrines the teachings of my Guru Sahibs. I need to understand this teaching in the context of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

My learning tells me that the term feet is a metaphor. It means accepting oneself to be nothing in the presence of the Guru from the depth of one’s heart and soul. This is the way to maximise learning.

In the context of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, I should reduce my mental resistance to zero. I have to dissolve my Ahamkara. Learn what is given in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, as it is given there.

This means, I have to deliberately switch off the mental faculties i.e. filters, attenuators and modifiers in my brain which screen and modify the information before it is presented to the brain for assimilation. I have to learn the Shabad the way it is stated in Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

I know it is possible. This is the way any new subject is to be learnt. This was the wisdom imparted in Ashrams of our land in ancient time. It is the modern way of learning too.

This is the way I have to assimilate Sikhi in my being. My being has to resonate with the Shabad i.e. what is said in Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

What a great teaching from my Guru; I feel blessed. Wah-e-Guru.

5. khY nwnku vIcwir dyKhu ivxu siqgur mukiq n pwey ]22] kahai naanak veechaar daykhhu vin satgur mukat na paa-ay. ||22||
Reference:: Sikh Philosophy Network http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/showthread.php?t=2097

Says Nanak; on thinking one finds that without Satguru liberation cannot be obtained.

My understanding:

Guru Sahib in this sentence instructs me to become one with the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

With this I close this post.

With love and respect for all.

Amarpal Singh
