Dear Khalsa Ji,
In this post, I convey to you all my understanding of the 17th Pauri of Anand Sahib.
1. pivqu hoey sy jnw ijnI hir iDAwieAw ] pavit ho-ay say janaa jinee har Dhi-aa-i-aa.
Those individuals who install remembrance of ‘The Sat’ in their being get purified.
My understanding:
Guru Sahib, earlier also, on so many occasions in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, told me to gain control over my mind, i.e. to acquire the ability to direct the mental process that leads to generation of thoughts. In this sentence Guru Sahib tells me the way to achieve it.
Guru Sahib tells me to install, in my mind, what ‘The Sat’ means to me.
How do I install ‘The Sat’ in my being is the question now? Science tells us that when we mentally dwell on some entity or an issue frequently, the mind takes it that it is important. The portion of the brain responsible from generating the thoughts will project the same thought again when the brain is not occupied with something else and we start dwelling on it again, confirming to the mind that the particular thought is important. The though can be about a beautiful car or something else.
Guru Sahib has asked me through Sri Guru Granth Sahib to practice Simran. This way, I tell my brain that the entity, which is meant by the word I use for Simran, is important. While practicing Simaran, I also recall the way I conceptualise the Nirakaar i.e. ‘The Sat’.
Simran, when practiced with full involvement of mental faculties leads to changes in the brain formatting in the way that first loosen and then releases the hold of vices of the individual. The individual becomes free from the hold of desires and the sense objects; the Ahamkara in her or him starts dissolving.
With these changes in the individual, the virtues blossoms from within the individual. The individual becomes and expression of love, compassion, equanimity, respect for the life in all forms and for the environment. This way, progressively, the senses obey the mind, which itself becomes subordinated to the individual’s conscience. You know, I know, everyone knows the conscience in some measure reflects ‘The Sat’; it is the portion of ‘The Sat’ in us. Now the individual has moved closer to ‘The Sat’. What does this means? It means that I have become relatively purified. Continuing with Simran this process continues. Practice makes perfect, one can achieve the ultimate purity which human form can have.
This is what my Guru Sahib has told me in this sentence of Gurbani – by making efforts (Simran) so that ‘The Sat’ in me and not my senses takes charge of my living, I become purified.
2. hir iDAwieAw pivqu hoey gurmuiK ijnI iDAwieAw ] har Dhi-aa-i-aa pavit ho-ay gurmukh jinee Dhi-aa-i-aa.
By installing the remembrance of ‘The Sat’ in ones being the individual becomes pure, those who install this remembrance in their being are Gurmukh
My understanding:
In this sentence Guru Sahib has defined what he means by the term ‘Gurmukh’. These are the purified individuals who have installed the remembrance of ‘The Sat’ in their being.
3. pivqu mwqw ipqw kutMb sihq isau pivqu sMgiq sbweIAw ] pavit maataa pitaa kutamb sahit si-o pavit sangat sabaa-ee-aa.
The purity dawns on mother, father, family and all others who are in company.
My understanding:
Guru Sahib tells me that this Gurmukh (purified individual) purifies all others who are in contact with her or him – in the family and beyond it also.
4. khdy pivqu suxdy pivqu sy pivqu ijnI mMin vswieAw ] kahday pavit sunday pavit say pavit jinee man vasaa-i-aa.
Those who have purified their minds speak truth and listen truth.
My understanding:
Guru Sahib tells me that once the mind has been purified, all aspects of life of this Gurmukh express truth and truth only. The individual now lives a life that is based on truth.
5. khY nwnku sy pivqu ijnI gurmuiK hir hir iDAwieAw ]17] kahai naanak say pavit jinee gurmukh har har Dhi-aa-i-aa. ||17||
Says Nanak, this way those are pure who as Gurmukh has installed the remembrance of ‘The Sat’ in their being.
My understanding:
In this sentence, Guru Sahib is one again emphasising for me the need to live a life based on truth, which demands installing the remembrance of ‘The Sat’ in my being.
