Dear Khalsa Ji,

With kindness of ‘The Sat’, today, I share my understanding of the 7th Pauri of Anand Sahib with you.

1. Awnµdu Awnµdu sBu ko khY Awnµdu gurU qy jwixAw ] aanand aanand sabh ko kahai aanand guroo tay jaani-aa.

Bliss, Bliss, everyone say, bliss is known through Guru (The Sat).

My understanding:

Guru Sahib is drawing my attention to the fact that words have limitations. They only convey information; they cannot carry the contents that the words imply. Any one can utter the word ‘Anand’ but what it is, is known only to those who have experienced it. The contents of this words can be experienced only through ‘The Sat’.

2. jwixAw Awnµdu sdw gur qy ik®pw kry ipAwirAw ] jaani-aa aanand sadaa gur tay kirpaa karay pi-aari-aa.

One can know what this eternal bliss is only when the beloved (The Sat) graces the individual.

My understanding:

This experience of ‘Anand’ the individual receives only with the grace of ‘The Sat’. I understand it to be so, because it is not a worldly experience, which can be organised by or for the individual. It is not a mental joy that the conscious part of the brain can manipulate and make the individual experience it. This feeling of bliss originates from where ‘The Sat’ resides in us. Once the individual becomes pure, her or his full being is illuminated by ‘The Sat’ and only ‘The Sat’. ‘The Sat’ being the master, the bliss naturally fills the individual. I hold the view that one has to qualify for the grace of ‘The Sat’ by becoming a pure human; the bliss is the natural consequence of this qualification.

3. kir ikrpw iklivK kty igAwn AMjnu swirAw ] kar kirpaa kilvikh katay gi-aan anjan saari-aa.

Bestowing the grace ‘The Sat’ detaches us from sinful tendencies, healing the individual with ointment of wisdom.

My understanding:

Guru Sahib is telling me that when the individual is graced ‘The Sat’ i.e. her or his whole being getting illuminated by ‘The Sat’, the individual feels fulfilled and thus the desires and consequent craving and sinful tendencies do not arise in her or him any more. Such individual crosses the domain of knowledge and enters the domain of wisdom where all that she or he does is always right and for higher cause much beyond the self.

4. AMdrhu ijn kw mohu qutw iqn kw sbdu scY svwirAw ] andrahu jin kaa moh tutaa tin kaa sabad sachai savaari-aa.

From deep within, having got over the attachments, their Shabad ‘The Sat’ arranges.

My understanding:

My understanding is that what is written in Sri Guru Granth Sahib (Sikhi) is Shabad, uttering what is written there is also Shabad, singing the same is also Shabad and a life lived according to the teachings (Sikhi) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib is also Shabad. The latter form is Shabad in action in real life. We Khalsas read Shabad, we recite Shabad, we sing Shabad, and we live Shabad i.e. we play out the Shabad (its teachings) in our real life.

Guru Sahib in this sentence is telling me that if from my deepest layers of my mind I get over all of my attachments, then the grace of ‘The Sat’ (which infuses wisdom in me) will enable me to live my life in accordance with the Shabad. My life will become Shabad in action and represent Shabad itself.

Guru Sahib has said in this sentence ‘—tin ka Sabad saachai savaari-aa. Here the word Sabad to me means: a life that is lived according to the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

5. khY nwnku eyhu Anµdu hY Awnµdu gur qy jwixAw ]7] kahai naanak ayhu anand hai aanand gur tay jaani-aa. ||7||

Says Nanak, that is the bliss, the bliss that is comes or known from the Guru (‘The Sat’).

My understanding:

Guru Sahib is once again telling me that speaking about something and knowing about it are two different things. The bliss that dawn on the individual with the grace of ‘The Sat’ is the real one; this experience is what it is; it is to know what bliss is.

With this I close.

With love and respect for all.
