It is surrounded by District Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar in the Northwest, District Ludhiana in the West, District Fatehgarh Sahib in the Southwest, District SAS Nagar in the South, Districts Una and Solan of Himachal Pradesh State in the North and District Bilaspur of Himachal Pardesh State in the Northeast. The City of Ropar is the headquarter of this District. The District of Rupnagar was founded by Raja Rokeshar in the 11th Century who named it after his son Rup Sen. This District is famous for many Historical Gurdwaras including that of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, Guru Har Rai, Guru Harkishan Sahib ji, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and of guru Gobind Singh Ji which are in the memory of the armed struggle of Tenth Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji against the injustice and atrocities of the Mughal rulers of that Era. Apart from this, both Guru Har Rai Ji and Guru Harkrishan Ji were also born at this place and they received the Gurgadi (Guruship) at this place. At this place, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji had received the Sis (head) of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji with his Sikhs, which Bhai Jaita Ji had brought from Delhi at a great risk to his life, with great love and respect. Guru Teg Bahadur Ji sacrificed his own life on the prayers of the Kashmiri Pundits for saving Hinduism, in Delhi. The last remains of many Sikh Gurus have been put into the Satluj River flowing nearby Kiratpur. Even today many Sikhs bring the remnants of their dead and put into Satluj River instead of going to Hardwar.. Near Kiratpur Sahib, there is a Gurudwara related to Baba Gurditta and Muslim Peer Budhan Shah Ji, which is situated only a short distance from Gurudwara Kiratpur Sahib. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji visited this place and met here with peer Budhan shah ji. Peer ji offered Guru Sahib milk to drink but Guru Sahib asked him to preserve it which he will have it later on. Later when Guru Har Gobind Sahib ji came to this place and established a city. Then Sri Guru Har Gobind Sahib ji met peer Budhan Shah ji with his son Gurdita ji and asked for milk which Guru Nanak Dev ji had asked to preserve. (1) It was Baba Gurdita Ji who appeared to Buddhan shah as Guru Nanak and he offered the bowl of milk preserved since then to Baba Gurdit Ji who drank it. A Gurdwara was constructed by Guru Hargobind Ji and the hillock and developed later into a magnificent Bhavan. It is by the side of the majestically flowing canal coming out of River Satluj. Gurdwara is built on a raised platform and can be reached through a long flight of steps. The mausoleum of Baba Budhan Shah is also close on a mound.
